Cholesterol is a type of lipid which is waxy and fat like in appearance. It is yellow crystalline solids which contence a notch like structure and is main structural component in plasma membranes and cell membranes. Cholesterol literally means solid alcohol from biles as it is isolated from bile.
Cholesterol contains steroid nucleus which is also called as porphorin ring. It is amphiphilic in nature means it contains both hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups. Cholesterol is determinant membrane component in plasma membranes and responsible for its permeability.
If accumulated in high amount it blocks the arteries or veins. As it forms a layer around the arteries and veins it chokes it up and causes heart attack or coronary arteries diseases.
It's main function is to maintain structure of membranes. As is poor conducter of electricity present in nervous tissue membranes and maintains electric impulses passing in this tissues. It's main function is that it act as precursor in the formation of hormones and vitamin D. It's range in human body is 125-200 mg/dL.
Types of cholesterol are as follows:-
1) LDL
Low density Lipoprotein also called as bad cholesterol as it is main component of formation of cholesterol and blockage of arteries and vein. VLDL is very low density Lipoprotein and a type of LDL.
2) HDL
High density Lipoprotein are also called as good cholesterol and removes cholesterol from arteries and veins.
Exercise thirty minutes a day, a good diet, proper lifestyle reduces cholesterol from our body and makes us to live long life.
